Berbeda dengan pendahulunya, BlackBerryBold, Onyx tak lagi menggunakan trackball untuk mengarahkan kursor. Mereka menggunakan TrackPad.

Dengan teknologi ini, penyakit trackball macet karena debu yang menumpuk tak akan terjadi lagi.

Di Jakarta BlackBerry ini dijual dengan harga eceran Rp 6.450.000 (tanpa kartu dan pajak).

Seperti halnya Bold, Onyx mengusung teknologi terbaru. Mereka memakai sistem operasi versi 5, wifi, dan koneksi GSM berbasis 3G. RIM juga memperbarui BlackBerry messenger sehingga jauh lebih enak.

Sekilas bentuknya mirip perpaduan antara BlackBerry Bold dan Javeline. Mereka menggunakan garis desain yang manis seperti Javeline dan bukan garis desain macho ala Bold.
